Dr Cheng is the Chief of Service in the Department of Microbiology and the Infection Control Officer at Queen Mary Hospital. He also holds an Honorary Clinical Professor position at the Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, at The University of Hong Kong.

Dr Cheng serves as an Editorial Board member for peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Hospital Infection, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, and Antimicrobial Stewardship and Healthcare Epidemiology. He was selected as an International Ambassadors Delegate to the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) for the year 2018. Additionally, he was selected to the research council committee (2020 to 2023) and the publication committee (2024 to 2026) of SHEA.

With over 350 international peer-reviewed articles in the field of clinical infectious diseases, diagnostic clinical microbiology, and infection control, he has been recognized as a ‘2021, 2022, and 2023 Highly Cited Researcher’ by Clarivate Analytics.
